Green Junglefowl (Gallus varius)

Other names : Javan jungle flow.

Sub sorts : unavailable.

Homeland : forests and agriculture fields on Java and surrounding.

Description : males can be easily distinguished from other jungle fowls with their big crest without cave. Crest is light blue behind the head and violet-like red on other parts. There is a throat sag with same color. Only outer edges are blue and there exist a yellow spot on a part very close to throat. All feathers are metallic green and black. There are light green and blue patterns on back of neck. Wing covers are covered with bronze feathers. Females are darker than other jungle fowls and compared to other sorts they have a pheasant appearance. There is not a clear crest. It is completely dark brown and there are dark green feathers on upper side that give a flaky appearance. Lower part is light brown with pale stains.

Reproduction time : From mid April till June.

Reproduction age : first year.

Annual egg number : 5-10 eggs

Incubation period : They are very sensitive compared to other jungle fowls. They are not much resistent against winter. Egg-laying boxes should be placed for females to lay eggs. Such boxes should be placed at a height of 1.00 m from the ground. Chickens are inclined to eat difficultly. Therefore golden pheasant or bantam chickens should be left together with them in order to teach how to eat. They also require vivid feed (worm and larva).
