Satyr Tragopan (Tragopan satyra)

Other names : Indian tragopan, Crimson’s tragopan, Crimson’s horned tragopan.

Sub sorts : unavailable.

Homeland : Middle and Eastern Himalaya in mountainous forests at 2400-4200 meters height in summer and up to 1800 meters height in winter.

Description : Males are completely feathered and black, they have two bands on both sides of crest. Sides of neck, upper part of back, shoulders and upper part of chest are dark reddish. Lower parts are reddish with presence of eye-shaped spots of black and white color. Such spots are bigger on rib and hip areas. Legs are pink. Part sagging from throat extends up to 100 mm during show time to female. Middle section of this part is blue and edges are pale gray and there exist 4 or 5 triangle red stains on both sides. Females are different colors changing from red to pale brown on uppers parts. There exist stains in pale light yellow color and thin bars in blackish color.

Reproduction time : from March to June.

Reproduction age : second year

Annual egg number : 4-6 eggs

Incubation period : These fowls may better tolerate cold air however they are not so resistant to hot and direct sun light. Since females are accustomed to lay egg on heights, arrangement should be made in order them to lay egg on perch. As they like secrecy during time of mating, places should be arranged for seclusion. They are fed with egg feed, thin chopped greens and vivid feed. They like to eat worms spread on egg.
