Himalaya Monal Pheasant (Lophophorus impeyanus)

Sub sorts : Presently sub-sort is unavailable. However a sub-sort surviving in North West India without white stain on thigh with more green parts on chest may be considered as a sub sort.

Homeland : mixed forests covered with rocky, grassy consisting of trees with cypress cones at Himalayas, from Afghanistan until China.

Description : Male was furnished with beautiful metallic green, violet and blue colors. It further has a big white stain on thigh. Chest and tail with black base are copper. It has bright green extensions on top like a peacock.there is a nude stain in turqoise blue around the eye. Females are brown and black with light yellow and white thin bars. Neck is white. It has a short crest. There are blue stains around its eyes. Females look like males in first year but males are bigger and they have black feathers on neck and chest.

Reproduction time : April.

Reproduction age : second year.

Annual egg number : 4 - 6 eggs

Incubation period : They incise ground and destroy grass, bush and greens in cop with their powerful beak. They are comfortable on incised ground however ground must be dry because they are adversely effected from humidity. They can well tolerate cold weather however they are not resistant to excessive hot thus they need shelters and shadowy places. They are usually bred in couples. However there exist breeders keeping them triples. Although they are big, they are really kind fowls and females can be submissive. They sometime cry out very loudly. They are fed with egg-feed and cereal. They like greens.
