Elliot Pheasant (Syrmaticus ellioti)

Other names : Chinese bard back pheasant.

Homeland : dense mixed forests at 1900 meters height in South East China.

Description : Male; top is chestnut color, sides of cheeks are whitish gray, back of neck is dark gray. Bakc, wings and upper side of chest are bright reddish chestnut color. Little wing feathers have a band of steel blue color. Bigger wing feathers have a black band close to edge and a white color on ends which forms a band along the wing. Lower side of chest, abdomen are white and the ground hidden under the feathers of wings is dark brown. Thigh is chesnut brown with white bars on it. Iris is light orange, beak is yellow and the legs are gray. Top of females is reddish brown and ends of feathers are blackish and also there are white stains in arrow form and a black bar at the part close to edges. There is a dark brown stain on chest extending down to abdomen.

Reproduction time : in March.

Reproduction age : Males acquire adult feathers during the first year, however they are usually not fertile until second year age.

Annual egg number : 6-8 eggs

Incubation period : Although its generation is under risk, number of fowls being bred is considerably high. Males are aggressive against females sometimes. A male can be preserved together with 3 females. However. They should have sufficient area and nest sections. They can endure low temperature but they cannot resist excessive hot. Shadowy areas should be present. Sex becomes certain on one-week age of chickens, males have lined tail feather while females have straight tail feather with pale color on middle.
